Thank you for all the welcoming, big hearted and loving times you allowed me into your home and into the life of your family. From assisting me with my car making my hour way drive out. To making me feel part of the family while receiving some of your old work shirts for my new job. I appreciate everything you have done being a great friend, father and family member to many who have met you. You will be missed immensely and will not be forgotten. Love you Vj.

VJ was the youngest of our clan (11 cousins) who grew up in Sri Lanka. I am filled with lots of happy memories. I really got to know the man when I visited Sri Lanka in 1980. He has always been his own man. My wife reminded me of the time we visited in L.A and and we were at Burbank Grand prix, we were driving as fast as we can but, not VJ he had his left arm down the door and just going for a Sunday drive. That image is burned into my memory.
I am so glad I got to talk him on fathers day. He sounded so happy and healthy.
Prie, shawn, Sheanna (excuse my spelling) my thoughts are with you and rest of our expanded family.
You rest there VJ, my heart is heavy and you will always will be in my memory

We are heartbroken for his family at the loss. We express our deepest condolences. We'll miss his random waves from the little black truck, his extensive auto knowledge, and his "back home" stories. My favorite memory will be him inviting me over to have Grandma teach me how to make mango chutney for a fusion cooking competition I had. My dad took it particularly hard as VJ was one his best KofC buddies. VJ kept me company while I recovered from Leukemia many days at Kaiser, and I forever will be grateful. May God welcome him warmly and help his family heal.

To my kids, you’ll always be Papa VJ. To my wife, you’ll always be our greatest neighbor. And from me to, you’ll always be my mentor, friend, brother and the most humble and blessing man I know. Since I moved up here in 1996 from Hawaii and join St Philomena, I will never forget the very first day we met. It was the old church (hall now) and you always stood at the back side entrance on the right door way. White button up long sleeve dress shirt, with the top 5 buttons opened haha. Everyday I go to work, my route is always in front of your house. I’d see you like 80% of the times early morning and we’ll chat before I go off to work. I’ll still be taking that same route and I’ll always look out my window to see you. We love you Papa VJ. Until we meet again, watch over us from up above. Don’t drink too much up there ok haha.

Wijendra Dalpathado, “ Uncle VJ”, to me was both a mentor and a father figure. He was the person in my life who fostered my love of cars and taught me a lot of what I know about vehicle mechanics. I remember the days as a child that I spent at his garage in Los Angeles where he taught me about how cars work. He had a huge love of German cars, especially the BMW 2002 and the Porsche 930 911. He would tell me stories of his younger years and the pair of widebody 2002s that both him and his brother had. I remember as a child getting rides in his bright red 930 911 and his 2002 and remembering how awesome I thought both cars were. It was probably natural, then, when I turned 16 that I went and bought a 2002 myself. There were many times in my high school years where I would take apart my 2002 and my E21 and not know how to put them back together. He was there to bail me out every single time. I learned stick shift in his parts hauler, a beat up 1983 Toyota Pickup with a wooden Nardi steering wheel with Porsche emblem on it. He always helped me out so much: be it life advice, working on cars, or learning how to be a young man. Senior year of highschool when I was debating on whether I should become a mechanic or go to engineering school he was the one who advised me to go into engineering.

He had a big heart, a great sense of humor, and always gave so much of himself. He was active not only with his family, but also with his church and local community. He touched so many people’s lives and I’m sure that there are many people who could give great stories of what he meant to them. I always hoped that the day that I “made it” in professional motorsports that I would be able to invite him to the pit garages at the Long Beach GP or COTA at a team that I worked at to say thank you for everything he did for me. Sadly he left us before that dream ever could come true. Rest in Peace Uncle VJ, I will always think of you every time I go on track and every time I work on my 2002.
